Many
say Nelson’s ability to see the land for
what it is and to shape the holes according to
what he was given by nature is where Nelson’s
wisdom lies. His desire to leave this ancient
land unspoiled is just another example of his
brilliance.
“It’s not exactly a true links course
because we’re in a different climatic zone,
and we don’t have the exact same turf conditions,”
Nelson explains. “Plus, because of the heat
and humidity, we don’t have the fescue grasses
and so forth. But in many respects, The Dunes
is as close to an authentic links as can be built
in Hawaii.”
Robin Nelson designed The Dunes with the classic
courses of the British Isles in mind. He had similar
terrain, a great imagination, and the nerve to
create a great Hawaiian links with character and
charm.
Robin Nelson is one of the top designers in the
world, with courses in Europe, North America,
Asia, and the South Pacific. His designs, refurbishes,
and redesigns in Hawaii alone include the Mauna
Lani North and South Courses on the Big Island;
Coral Creek, Royal Kunia, Ewa Beach International,
Bay View, West Lock, and the Mid-Pac and Oahu
Country Clubs, on Oahu; and Kapalua’s Bay,
Wailea’s Blue, and Sandalwood, on Maui,
and The Dunes.
